Munson’s Greatest Calls
Munson Tribute
Unmistakable…he is the very definition of all that is Bulldog. His calls have immortalized some of the greatest moments in the history of a sport. Down here in the Southland, between the fabled hedges, pigskins fly and legends get revered. And through it all, there’s that one voice calling out from somewhere in my headphones, exposing a heartbeat…Red & Black.
His images fly through the airwaves like Herschel into endzones. His off-the-cuff rantings step on faces like the “hobnail boot.” How I long to hear him crying out ’bout the Sugar from the skies. How I wish he could keep on keepin’ on, but I am reminded that here in God’s country, where the sun sets red, a legend never dies.
Larry Munson, the epitome of icons and the voice of the Dawgs.

I have all these calls on my I-Pod at home! At the beginning of every football season I let it rip. All the windows open in my house, the neighbors probably hating me, but ahh, Munson is the best.

I love Larry Munson! There’s nothing like listening to the radio and watching the game on a fall day between the hedges. I was born in Athens, Gawwgia and never thought twice about where I would go to college. I didn’t factor in that I would meet the love of my life my freshman year and move back to Marietta to be with him. I’m still a Dawg though. Hershel Walker was signed when I was a freshman at UGA. I remember being at a basketball game when the recruiter brought him to Athens. Everyone was like,”That’s the guy who is supposed to be so amazing.” Well, turns out he was.

Brannon, we are destined to become old coots who regale youngsters about the old days…the games that we were THERE for, and the voice we heard.
While Larry can’t be replaced, Georgia’s legacy of great calls can be enhanced. Enter Scott Howard. I’ve said for years that Scott is the greatest play by play man I’ve ever heard, in any sport at any level. I look forward to the day when he assumes the full time role.
Until then, I’ll pay respects to Larry..enjoying his folksy commentary and patiently waiting for the New World Order that is Scott Howard. nWo.
this is Greg, by the way….if you couldn’t have figured it out by now.
